A word about BACHMANN: Bachmann sets are completely track, power supply and coupling compatible with Hornby sets, you can mix the two brands of track (in fact, under some lights you can even see the word HORNBY on the back of the Bachmann track!) and the locos/wagons on the Bachmann sets are all full detail. As a result these sets are excellent value when compared with the equivalent Hornby, so make just as good a starter set and are ideal to add to an existing Hornby layout.

All Hornby Train Sets include track, controller, transformer, trakmat (excluding the "Boxed Set" series) and train. We do not consider any Hornby Train Set to be suitable for under 5's. We recommend ages 8+ as a minimum for all large Steam locomotive Hornby Train Sets (Flying Scotsman, Harry Potter etc) as they are fiddly to fit onto the track. All suggested layouts are ideally nailed down onto a 6 foot by 4 foot board - we recommend half inch Chipboard. Bachmann sets are basically the same as their Hornby equivalents but do not include the Trakmat - the track, controllers, trains and so on are completely Hornby compatible! Feeling lost? DIGITAL Hornby & Bachmann OO Gauge Train Sets			Our Price
Digital sets allow you to run multiple locos at the same time on the same track, all from one controller. The locos receive a signal from the controller (via the track) which tells them what speed to move at and in what direction. The result of this is that you can run multiple locos at different speeds on the same rail! Bachmann and Hornby systems both adhere to the DCC standard - this means that the Bachmann controller will run trains fitted with Hornby DCC chips and vice-versa. Track is identical in both makes of sets. The Bachmann controller is slightly simpler in operation as it only allows for 9 locos to be used at any one time (the Hornby one allows for many more - although how many you'd actually want to use is open to debate!
